Visiting Madeenah
Visiting Madeenah

Visiting the city of Madeenah is not a rite of Umrah or Hajj and has nothing to do with Umrah or Hajj.

However it is highly commendable to visit the Masjid-an-Nabawi.

One prayer in Masjid an Nabawi is better than 1000 prayers elsewhere, except al Masjid al Haraam, where one prayer is better than 100000 prayers elsewhere.

Salaah at 'Rawdah-tul-Jannah'

Try to perform Salaah in the area called ‘Rawdah-tul-Jannah’. This area is marked by white pillars and different colored carpet. (‘Rawdah-tul-Jannah’ is the area between the pulpit and Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ house). Prophet ﷺ said, “The area between my house and my minbar is one of the gardens of Paradise”.

While visiting the graves of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ extend your greetings while facing his grave saying,

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ الله

Al-salaamu ‘alayka ya Rasool-Allaah.

Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allaah.

Move about two steps to the right and extend your greetings to Abu Bakr (radhiAllaahu anhu) saying,

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ

Al-salaamu ‘alayka ya Aba Bakr

Peace be upon you, O Abu Bakr.

Move another step or two to the right and extend greetings to Umar (radhiAllaahu anhu) saying,

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا عُمَر

Al-salaamu ‘alayka ya ‘Umar

Peace be upon you, O Umar.

* If it is crowded, it is quite acceptable just to walk past the graves from anywhere in the mosque and pronounce the greetings as above.

* Sending greetings on behalf of someone has no evidence in the Sunnah.

* Do not supplicate to the Prophet ﷺ and also do not seek his intercession.

* Do not touch and kiss the walls and lattice.

Kindly note that there is NO authentic evidence from the Qur’an and Sunnah about offering 40 prayers in Masjid-an-Nabawi.

Many Sahaaba (Companions) and family members of the Prophet ﷺ are buried in Al Baqee cemetery. The Sunnah is to recite the Du’a (at any cemetery):

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ بِكُمْ لاَحِقُونَ، نَسْأَلُ اللهَ لَنَا وَلَكُمْ الْعَافِيَةَ

Al-salaamu ‘alaykum ahl al-diyaar min al-mu’mineen wa’l-muslimeen, wa innaa in sha Allaah bikum laahiqoon. Nas’al Allaah lana wa lakum al-‘aafiyah

Peace be upon you, O dwellers of these abodes, believers and Muslims. We will, when Allaah wills, join you. We ask Allaah to grant salvation to us and you.

Masjid-e-Quba

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “One who does Wudu at home, then offers Salaah in Quba Mosque is entitled to the reward of an Umrah.”

Graves of Martyrs of Uhud

It is recommended for those who visit Madeenah to visit the graves of the Martyrs of Uhud.

The Sunnah is to recite the same Du’a that you recited at Al Baqee Cemetery.
